Flash!! Update on 6th Grade Scientist Research

Another tool for creating your “Works Cited” has been suggested by a student. The EasyBib site can help you format your citations. The site also has a nice Reference site that shows how different types of citations are laid out.

6th Grade Scientist Research, pt. 2

Welcome back 6th Grade. I’m skipping to the routine we have developed for you to submit your “Works Cited” citations. I have set up a page in my TeacherWeb page for you to submit each citation. All you need to do is copy and paste your citation from your worksheet to the boxes available in TeacherWeb. I will look them over and return them, with any comments I have, to Mr. C. If you have any problems formatting your citation try consulting Purdue’s OWL (Online Writing Lab)NoodleBib Express or Son of Citation Machine. Good luck. If you have any questions, please ask!

100_0610.jpg 100_0626.jpg 100_0624.jpg We were fortunate to have three of the University of Notre Dame Women’s Basketball players visit and read to our classes. Brittany Mallory visited with Miss K’s 1st Grade class and Amanda Tsipis with Mrs. M’s 3rd Grade class. Both classes heard Jimmy’s Boa and the Bungee Jump Slam Dunk, by Trinka Hakes Noble and Hoops with Swoopes, by Susan Kuklin with Sheryl SwoopesErica Williamson read some basketball poetry from the book Hoop Kings, by Charles R. Smith, Jr. One of the most amazing poems illustrated an “actual size” print of Shaquille O’Neal’s shoe sole on a fold-out page! Stephanie Menio accompanied each of the women and the classes were excited to find out that she had brought T-shirts for all three classes of students. The players were all gracious enough to stay and autograph t-shirts and bookmarks for the students. Thank you, from all of us. 100_0612.jpg

The weather outside is frightful!

Due to our changeable Indiana weather, some of our guest readers were not able to come because school was canceled. We would still like to extend our thanks to our own Fr. JohnMr. Randy Ray from the Northern Indiana Center for History and Becky Bonham from the Studebaker National Museum for offering to come and visit with us. Hopefully we can schedule something with them at another date.

Our own Fr. Nate was our guest reader for Mrs. L’s 2nd grade class. He read one of his favorites, You Are Special, by Max Lucado. The students always enjoy this special book that reminds them of their own uniqueness . Fr. Nate 100_0592.jpgMr. Tom Coxey from the YMCA of Michiana read to Mrs. L’s Kindergarten class.  Teamwork was the theme of the story Mim, Gym, and June, by Denis Roche that the class heard. Working as a team and staying active can make anyone successful! Mr. Coxey also passed out copies of the Spring schedule and encouraged everyone to come and visit the YMCA.

6th Grade Scientist Research, pt. 1

A special greeting to all of our 6th grade students – who are playing guinea pigs for trying some new technology! Mr. C in Science, Mrs. D in the Computer Lab and myself in the Library are working together to help you present an outstanding Powerpoint presentation on the scientist that has been assigned to you. Mr. C & Mrs. D have defined your task and will be providing a rubric for assessing your finished product. First of all, you need to carefully read the assignment through, highlighting key words to pinpoint information you need might be helpful. Next, you should brainstorm what would be the best sources to find the information you need. Remember that Mr. C is requiring that you use INSPIRE for at least one of your sources. When you do your search you should check-mark the “Biographies” category and it is always a good idea to do a search for a person as “Last name, First name.” Check back for part 2, coming soon
